Katherine becomes attracted to Michael after a party. They begin dating and the issue of sex comes up early in their relationship. They speak of it as more of a health issue than a moral one. They finally do have sex and she believes that they will be together forever. But they are separated over the summer and she falls in love with her tennis instructor, Leo. She breaks the news to Michael when he comes to visit and begins to understand that relationships are more complicated than she thought.
